NEW IDENTIFICATION FOR DOMESTIC TRAVEL
It’s common knowledge that you need official identification for air travel. Traditionally, a valid driver’s license would have been accepted – until now. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recently stated that the REAL ID Act is officially going into effect in 2018. According to this law, identification – like driver’s licenses – from states not in compliance with the REAL ID Act cannot be acknowledged by federal agencies as valid identification. As a result, if you reside in a state that’s not compliant, you will need another form of identification to fly domestically, which includes private aircraft charters. The official release is as follows:

“As a result of the REAL ID Act (2005), new airline travel restrictions will take effect in 2018 for U.S. citizens traveling by air domestically. The REAL ID Act establishes minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards and prohibits federal agencies, like TSA, from accepting licenses and identification cards for official purposes from states that do not meet these standards. Beginning January 22, 2018, guests with driver’s licenses or state IDs issued by states that are not in compliance with the REAL ID Act and have not been granted an extension by DHS may not use these forms of identification to fly within the US. If the state is in compliance, guests may continue to use state-issued driver’s license or ID for domestic air travel only if your state has been granted an extension to the compliance deadline by DHS.”

This law requires REAL ID to be necessary to enter several high profile buildings. These include federal facilities, nuclear power plants, and federally regulated commercial aircraft – including private aircraft charters.

As of October 10, 2018, 37 states, territories, and the District of Columbia are compliant with the REAL ID requirements. It is prudent to check with your state to confirm the extension deadline. If you are uncertain if your driver’s license will be approved by TSA, it is best to check with your state or www.state.gov. A valid passport is an acceptable form of identification for your travel.

Private aircraft charters, like those coordinated through Exclusive Air, will be required to provide a REAL ID or passport as per the requirement. Please call us at 603-881-8400 with any questions or for your aircraft charter needs.
